What’s a Health Care Surrogate, and Why You Need One Now

ree

Imagine this: You're rushed to the hospital unconscious, unable to communicate your wishes to your doctors. Who would make medical decisions for you in such a critical

situation? If you don’t have a Health Care Surrogate, your family might face a confusing and potentially painful decision-making process without any guidance.

A Health Care Surrogate is someone you appoint to make medical decisions for you if you're unable to do so. Think of them as your voice when you can't speak for yourself. This person is empowered to make decisions about your health care, including life-saving treatments or end-of-life care, based on your wishes and values.

Unlike a Living Will, which addresses your specific medical preferences in advance (like whether you want life support), a Health Care Surrogate allows you to name someone who can make those decisions on your behalf when the need arises.

It's especially important to choose someone who:

  • Understands your values and preferences regarding medical care.

  • Can act quickly and confidently in high-stress situations.

  • Is trusted to make tough decisions when needed.

Without a Health Care Surrogate, your family could be forced to go through a lengthy court process to gain the legal authority to make medical decisions for you. This could cause unnecessary delays during a time when prompt decisions are crucial.

Pro Tip: If you're creating or updating your Health Care Surrogate designation, be sure to have a conversation with the person you're appointing. It’s important they understand your wishes in detail—before the situation arises.
